Chapter Eleven

“The press is calling him the Executioner,” Andrews said.

“This is messed up,” Captain Roy said. “We have the press breathing down our back, and the commissioner is on my back. He wants this solved as soon as possible. The press has gotten wind that the murderer seems to be doing this to make Robin a target. The commissioner is asking me for answers, answers I do not have.”

The Captain turned to look at Robin, and she met his gaze, unyielding.

“What does this man want with you?” the Captain asked.

“Beats me,” Robin said.

“It’s personal to him,” Kyle said. “He clearly knows a lot about your life, and he is utterly obsessed with you. Could he be a deranged fan? Someone you promised something to but forgot? He knew about your connection to the Butcher, and he presented you with his head. And then, the next killing was at the warehouse you were linked to.”

“Whoever he is, he is not a copycat,” Robin said. “He is not someone the Butcher trained to work in his stead. The method of killing was vastly different from the method used by the Butcher.”

“And yet, the way he had severed the head was done in practically the same precise manner that the Butcher did his incisions,” Kyle said, looking down at the autopsy report. “The connection is there, but we don’t see it yet.”

“What do we know about the kidnapping?” Captain Roy asked.

“She went out clubbing with her friends after work,” Robin said. She knew the reports by heart now. Laura went there around 7 PM and hung out with her friends for about three hours. Her friends claim that Laura was more of an introvert, and she wasn’t too comfortable in clubs. The only reason Laura went was that her friends forced her to. Around 9 PM, she told them she was going home because she was tired and wanted to be home with her kids. The CCTV footage shows her leaving the club and heading out of the building. Her friends said she was going to find a cab to take her home. At this point, we don’t know where she went, but it’s safe to assume that is when he kidnapped her.”

“The timing matches the time of death,” Kyle said. “The coroner gave us a window of 10 PM to 11 PM. We can safely assume he kidnapped her after she left the club and then murdered her.”

“The way of murder was quite different from the Butcher’s in multiple ways,” Robin said. “Not only did he forego the six months, but he also inflicted almost no pain on her. The coroner believes he used a tranquilizer to sedate her and then drugged her before he slit her throat. She probably never felt the terror and the pain that the Butcher enjoyed inflicting on his victims. He is not doing this because of some sick, demented ritual to purge himself. No. He is going after something completely different.”

“It’s obvious he is doing this just to target Robin,” the Captain said.
